WORKSHOPS

Waste to Advanced Resources Wokshop

This workshop is an excellent opportunity to engage with representatives from different sectors, including industry, municipalities, national laboratories, federal and state agencies, and universities, to explore innovative solutions to maximize resource recovery and minimize waste disposal in landfills.

Participants will have the opportunity to discuss current practices, challenges and explore opportunities, share their expertise and feedback, and collaborate in outreach and education through University-Industry-Public partnerships.

Waste Management Sites Visited

Sonoco Recycling

Sonoco Recycling is focused on providing sustainable recycling solutions for a wide range of materials, including paper, plastics, metals, and more.

The Sonoco Recycling visit was an exciting opportunity for participants to witness first-hand the recycling process for various materials, such as paper, plastics, and metals. They learned about how these materials were sorted, processed, and made ready for reuse in new products.

Our visit provided a valuable opportunity to learn and apply this knowledge to our own projects or initiatives related to sustainability and environmental responsibility. We also characterize residual MSW samples from materials recycling facility (MRF) destined for landfill.

South Wake Landfill

The Wake County landfill is a large waste management facility that serves the local community by safely and responsibly disposing of solid waste.

At the Wake County Landfill, visitors were able to learn about waste management procedures such as waste transportation, sorting, and disposal. Our visit there is crucial for both a general understanding of waste management practices and our projects on sustainability and environmental responsibility. The landfill tour also enables us to explore new waste management technologies and approaches while building connections with industry experts.
